To be competitive in sim racing, it's recommended that you use a steering wheel and pedals as a minimum. A gamepad is considered subpar for racing sims like iRacing, rFactor 2 and Assetto Corsa Competizione. However, there is such a wide variety of steering wheels and pedals available that use different methods to achieve similar results that you must be aware of precisely what you're getting and exactly how it works.
