iRacing tweeted an image recently of an LMP3 car that's on its way to join the service soon. It will probably join the iRacing European Sprint Series and other endurance series as a prototype racer below the LMDh and LMP2 cars.
Ligier JS P320
The Ligier JS P320 is the LMP3 car that iRacing tweeted about that conforms to the current FIA LMP3 specification. The vehicle weighs 950kg and is powered by a 455hp 5.6L V8 driving the rear wheels via a 6-speed gearbox. The car develops relatively high levels of downforce, giving it good speed in the corners.
Final thoughts
The new Ligier LMP3 should join the existing LMDh, LMP2, and GTE/GT3 cars to create a fourth category in iRacing endurance racing. It will be aimed at newcomers to prototype racing that plans to work their way up to the BMW LMDh via LMP2. Endurance racing is very popular in iRacing, with races in the European Sprint Series and the IMSA iRacing Series featuring full grids for almost every time slot.
We're glad that iRacing announced the Ligier LMP3 and hope that they'll announce the mothballing of the GTE category soon, as well as introduce a couple more LMDh/LMH cars.
