Rally sims are not anywhere as popular as road racing sims but they still have a devoted following. Dirt Rally 2.0, arguably the best rally sim currently available was released in 2019. It's incredibly detailed and probably is as realistic as you can get without actually driving a rally car. The only problem with it is it can be too realistic and just as punishing as the real thing if you make even a tiny mistake.
Dirt 5 however is a lot more forgiving. It was released in 2019 and is aimed at the more casual racer that wants a rally experience without feeling like death is waiting at the next corner.
WRC Generations, the official game of the 2022 World Rally Championship (WRC) is on the simulator side of rallying and is a direct competitor to Dirt Rally 2.0. It features all of the official cars and rally stages as found in the 2022 WRC.
The highest category of vehicle in the 2022 WRC is the Rally 1 class comprising the following three vehicles:
- Ford Puma
- Hyundai i20 N
- Toyota GR Yaris
All three cars will be in the game with highly detailed models and handling to match. These cars will be joined by the Rally 2 class vehicles as well as a huge number of legendary cars from back in the day.
Hybrid power
Just like in Formula 1 and Le Mans Hypercar, Rally 1 cars in WRC Generations will feature hybrid technology that gives the driver a boost of the line as well as extra performance whenever they apply the throttle. Three electrical power maps will be available that balance speed with longevity.
Final thoughts
WRC Generations is the last in the series made by developer Kylotonn before the licence is moved to EA next year. The game will feature a full career mode, 137 special stages, a league mode and several other features that we think will make it a must-buy for rally fans. We're not sure if EA will build on this in 2023 or murder the game with microtransactions. Hopefully, it's the former.
WRC Generations will be released on 13 October 2022 for Xbox and Playstation with the PC and Nintendo Switch versions being released the following month. Stay tuned for our full review.
